Current Rector of Leven |
George Sampson |
Dear Mr Davies, I have had a look on our Rectors
board at Leven church and can confirm that George Sampson was a
Rector at Leven from the dates you specified (approx 14 years)
in that time he performed more than 63 baptisms and 29 weddings
as well as numerous funerals from our records. Unfortunately I
have been unable to find any more information about anything
else you specifies. If I can be of any further assistance to you
then please do not hesitate to let me know.

I
am researching my family tree and so far have reached around the
year 1790. I have discovered that the daughter of George
Sampson married my Great x4 Grandfather. I am interested if
anyone has any information on George Sampson. He was born on
18th March 1780, at Beverley, went to school at Rugby and
Beverley, migrated to St.Johns Oct 22 1801. Migrated to St.
Catherines as a Fell.- Comm, May 14 1806 gained a B.A. and became
the
Rector of Leven (on his own petition in 1815
until his death in 1839, he was also the J.P. ( Justice of Peace
) for the E Riding of Yorks. His wife was named Anna, and he
had a daughter ( although there may have been other children )
called Ellen. It was Ellen who married my Great x4 Grandfather.
They married in 1839 at St. Chads Church Shrewsbury, odd that a
Welshman would marry a Yorkshire Lass given the lack of
communications and transport at that time, this is what I am
finding so interesting, how did they meet, what or how they kept
the courting going etc. and they married the year her father
died. Please feel free to Email me with any relevant
information.

have done a little research into the
family name and managed to visit Leven and the surrounding area.
May not be news to you but I couldn't find any Runtons in the
churchyard but found that the old church of St Faith was pulled
down in 1844 and is sited 1 mile to the west of the village. There
are three Runtons together in the old graveyard - Rebecca who
died at the age of 8 in 1841 and her parents George and Mary
Jane of Leven Carr. I have traced my line back to James Runton
and Jane Richmond who were from Aldborough. As James was born in
1772 (Aldborough) looks like he would be the son of the
James Runton and Elizabeth Robinson you speak of. runtie13@btinternet.com

Pauline, your info posted
Jan 06 is still of interest to me. I had info from America that
John Day Leven village poet (1794-1828) wrote of Cresser in
1815 whilst he was working in Sigglethorne.
I understand a poem
is quoted in 'Descendants of Christopher Hebb of Yorkshire,
England 1724-1986' booklet by Raymond M.Hebb published in USA,
entitled 'A Catastrophe at pulling down Rev Wm Bentinck's Pigeon
Court'. Is this the one you have? Whatever, any poems referring
to the Hebb's will be of interest to me. Looking forward to

My

Hebbs that are descendants of Cresser Hebb of Leven. I know that
my great grandad was born near Scarborough and moved
to Sheffield in the early 1900's, Consequently we were
contacted about ten years ago by a solicitor in Hull called
Charles Hebb acting on behalf of a "Hebb" in America and
he confirmed the link between our family and Cressor Hebb
(who apparently had eight sons)
It
has always been a legend in our family that a relative (great
Grandads brother?) was on the Titanic. Recent research using the
internet has proved this to be true, he survived the sinking and
made a new life in Canada. He was a crew member, a
"Trimmer:" whatever that was, and I believe his
name was Albert Hebb (posted

Hi
- Saw
that you posted a request about the Runtons you may possibly be
related to from Leven. My
3 times great granddad married into the family in 1845 (James
Wylie). He married Hannah Runton in Warne in the parish of
Mearne. Looks like she may have been with child as James
Runton Wylie was born not very long afterward, which may explain
their marriage in a different parish.
I
found some documents and a mention of Hannahs fathers will on
the Beverley Archive Website.
George
Runton and Mary were Hannahs parents. A Margaret Runton
who was married to Fances Sellers. Ann
and Elizabeth and Catherine Runton 2 sons James and George
Runton.
Father
George died on the 23rd of February 1860.
It
seems that mother Margaret died on the 7th September
1900. Its not probably what you are looking for and if you
have the info already then I am truly sorry for getting your
hopes up. As you can see from my posting I would dearly
love to know a little about the Runtons as they are a small bit
of the history I am trying to piece together about the Wylies.

I am an historian of the NZ
Anglican church, and have been researching all the Anglican
priests who served here. Edwin Watts was the rector of Leven for
a long time - I wonder whether you have information that can
confirm my entry on his years there and maybe give me any more
information about him - memorials for instance, and the exact
dates when he came and went. Or anything about his wife.
Ill insert my Biographical Directory entry on him here so that
you can see what I have found so far. You will see that it is a
fairly muddled life. Much moving around - too much money?
scandal? Restless? Looking for something? Anyway, if he was in
fact all those years at Leven, maybe he found what he wanted
there.
Who knows, but the search for these character is always
interesting, and the research provides an unique database for NZ
historians The online edition will be updated later this year. (the

married the schoolmaster's daughter from Leven school. The

Re:
Howard Little looking for the Taylor Family |
Hi
Howard; I'm David Smith I was born in the village in 1946 at a
place called Little Garth on the Hornsea road. I knew a
Taylor
family who
were farming in the village near to Little Garth, I don't know
the year they came to the farm but they were there when my
parents left in 1953/54.
There
was Ted as most called him . Ann was his eldest daughter
and Audrey was either the name of his wife or his younger
daughter I can't remember (well I was only little). I'm
not sure this is the same
Taylor
family you
are looking for but hope it will be of some use, I'll keep
thinking - David

Walker
/ Pygall |
I am looking for information on Mary Jane
Walker, born Leven around 1842. She married a John Pygall - a
Norfolk man possibly also living or working in Leven around that
time. They had a son George Pygall, born Leven in about 1868.
Any information on any of these (or ideas how I might progress
my research!) would be gratefully received. Les Hall

Taylor
Family |
Hello - Does
anyone remember the Taylor Family, they were in Leven in
1899-1900. My link is my Grandmother, who was born in Leven
with the name of Olive Lily Taylor (1899). She came from a
large family with 10 children. Her father was a farmer, ending
his career in Wawne. Olive was the youngest of the family and
they may have only been in the village for a short time.

I am trying to locate details about my great grandfather, Robert
FISHER. My grandfather's Australian Imperial Force (AIF)
enlistment papers for World War I list him as living at
"Little Sarth, Leven in Hull" in September 1915. If
anyone can provide any details about him or Little Sarth it

Re:

Hi Mark, I have just seen your mail
regarding the above names. Jane Kilvington was my Great Gran
Elizabeth Kilvington`s sister. Jane Married George Myers in
1852.Your Elizabeth was their daughter. I`m afraid I can't help
with your Lusby family, but have quite a lot on the Kilvington`s.
Looking at the 1891 census for Leven there is Charles Lusby 24
single born Grimsby. Ag. Lab. Is this your Charles.?

Re:

I would
like to thank Bob and the provider of this site for the
suggestion of looking at the churches. The
provider checked the Holy Trinity Churchyard and St. Faith's
churchyard for me. He did not find my great grandfather,
but a Mark Masterman. It's a start. Thank you both
for taking the time to help me!! Sally

Re:

Dear Bob, I live in California, and am not sure what
address the "local Leven church" would be. The
churches on this site are either not there any longer or built
after 1812. If someone in Leven has an idea of where I can
write, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Masterman |
I was wondering
if there is someone who could help me with genealogy. My great
grandfather Matthew Masterman was born in the Parish in 1812. We
have been looking for a long time for a father. Old family
records have a John Masterman born about 1786 or Henry Masterman
born about 1790. Can anyone help?

Wylie |
I am
researching my family tree and hope someone can help in tracing
members of the Wylie family in or around the area. We know of a
James Wylie around 1851, listed as a butcher. This family
consisted of wife Hannah, sons John G, James R, Thomas (my great
great grandfather), Henry, and daughters, Mary and Kate. What is
left of the family we know, now mostly reside in Lincolnshire,
though there are others further a-field. It would be great to
find the littlest of information.
