Current Rector of Leven George Sampson

Dear Mr Davies,   I have had a look on our Rectors board at Leven church and can confirm that George Sampson was a Rector at Leven from the dates you specified (approx 14 years) in that time he performed more than 63 baptisms and 29 weddings as well as numerous funerals from our records. Unfortunately I have been unable to find any more information about anything else you specifies. If I can be of any further assistance to you then please do not hesitate to let me know. Malcolm Davies

I am researching my family tree and so far have reached around the year 1790.  I have discovered that the daughter of George Sampson married my Great x4 Grandfather. I am interested if anyone has any information on George Sampson. He was born on 18th March 1780, at Beverley, went to school at Rugby and Beverley, migrated to St.Johns Oct 22 1801. Migrated to St. Catherines as a Fell.- Comm, May 14 1806 gained a B.A. and became the Rector of Leven (on his own petition in 1815 until his death in 1839, he was also the J.P. ( Justice of Peace ) for the E Riding of Yorks.   His wife was named Anna, and he had a daughter ( although there may have been other children ) called Ellen. It was Ellen who married my Great x4  Grandfather. They married in 1839 at St. Chads Church Shrewsbury, odd that a Welshman would marry a Yorkshire Lass given the lack of communications and transport at that time, this is what I am finding so interesting, how did they meet, what or how they kept the courting going etc. and they married the year her father died. Please feel free to Email me with any relevant information. malcolmdavies696@btinternet.com   (posted 21 Aug 07)

Paul Martin Clegg

I am researching the name "Clegg".  William Clegg, who is my great-great etc. Grand Father, amongst others, was born in Leven at the beginning of the 19th Century.  He later moved to Ottringham where he ran the White Horse Inn and his daughter the Railway Inn.  I would love to find out more about the history of the Cleggs and East Riding.  If anyone's research has led them along the same lines I would love to hear their stories - Thanks very much Paul paul.martin@gfk.com  (posted 30 Apr 07)

George Strang Strang Hi, my fathers' mother was called Mary Ann and was in the Leven area around the 1920's. We are trying to find more information about her. Her brothers name was James Taylor, which we believe is something to do with Taylor Woodrow construction. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks (posted 28 Jan 2007)
C Scott Carrington Briggs
Hi - I was wondering if you could help me or indeed know anyone who maybe able to. I recently purchased some old documents relating to a music composer A Carrington Briggs from Leven, Hull, Yorks. The letter is dated March 7th 1954, so he resided in that area at that time I was wondering if you knew anyone who would have known him or any family members. I am putting an article together on the music he has written for another man in Northern Ireland. Thanks (posted 11 Nov 2006)
Paul Runton For Jeff Runton have done a little research into the family name and managed to visit Leven and the surrounding area. May not be news to you but I couldn't find any Runtons in the churchyard but found that the old church of St Faith was pulled down in 1844 and is sited 1 mile to the west of the village. There are three Runtons together in the old graveyard - Rebecca who died at the age of 8 in 1841 and her parents George and Mary Jane of Leven Carr. I have traced my line back to James Runton and Jane Richmond who were from Aldborough. As James was born in 1772 (Aldborough) looks like he would be the son of the James Runton and Elizabeth Robinson you speak of. runtie13@btinternet.com (posted 11 Nov 2006)
Thomas Lacy and Mary Ann Nicholson I am interested in the family of Thomas Lacy and Mary Ann Nicholson who were married at Routh in 1815 but had children at Leven between that time and 1827 before returning to Routh. Any birth, death entries would be helpful. (posted 16 October 06)
Kate Ribey Ribey Hi - I wondered if you could put a post up to ask if anyone knows the history of the Ribeys/Ribys in leven and Brandesburton pre-1881, particularly who lived at Starr Carr Farm. If anyone can help I would be very grateful.
Teresa   Can anyone help me with a Charlotte born in 1856 in Leven - she married Robert Williamson from Bridlington and had Ethel, Florence, Edith and Robert?  Please contact on www.genesreunited.co.uk.  Thanks (posted 10 June 06)

Mrs V Field (nee Hebb)  Reply for Pauline

Pauline, your info posted Jan 06 is still of interest to me. I had info from America that John Day Leven village poet (1794-1828) wrote of Cresser in 1815 whilst he was working in Sigglethorne.

I understand a poem is quoted in 'Descendants of Christopher Hebb of Yorkshire, England 1724-1986' booklet by Raymond M.Hebb published in USA, entitled 'A Catastrophe at pulling down Rev Wm Bentinck's Pigeon Court'. Is this the one you have? Whatever, any poems referring to the Hebb's will be of interest to me. Looking forward to being in contact.

Gary Hebb Hebb

My name is Gary Hebb and I am from the Sheffield/Worksop family of Hebbs that are descendants of Cresser Hebb of Leven. I know that my great grandad was born near Scarborough and moved  to Sheffield in the early 1900's, Consequently we were contacted about ten years ago by a solicitor in Hull called Charles Hebb acting on behalf of a "Hebb" in America and he confirmed the link between our family and Cressor Hebb (who apparently had eight sons)

It has always been a legend in our family that a relative (great Grandads brother?) was on the Titanic. Recent research using the internet has proved this to be true, he survived the sinking and made a new life in Canada. He was a crew member, a "Trimmer:" whatever that was, and I believe his name was Albert Hebb (posted 24 January 06)

Pauline John Day

I have just seen a message on the list from a V.Field dated Feb.05, regarding a poem by John Day of Sigglesthorne. John Day was my 4 x Great Grandfather, and I have a copy of the poem, mentioning Cresser Hebb, Bricklayer. I would imagine the poster has found this info after all this time, but if not please get in touch. (posted 23 January 06)

Ann Wass Matilda Simpson

I have avidly been trying to build my family tree.  The Matilda Simpson featured in your website I believe to be my 3 x Great Grandmother and therefore would be very interested in contacting Mrs B Ramsden who I believed submitted this story.  Would you kindly pass my details on to her and ask her to contact me. I would be very grateful indeed for any assistance with this - my Matilda Simpson (the grandaughter mentioned in your article)  has haunted me for some time now and I would love to know if Mrs Ramsden has any more information. (posted 20 January 06)

Gordon Atkin Atkin

I am researching my fathers ancestors who under the name of Atkin lived in West Street for many years. George Atkin who was born in 1801 lived there as did his son David and his wife Eliza who was born in 1844 and died in her 90's. Any information on the family will be gratefully received. (posted 11 November 05)

Maurice North North

I am interested in any information anyone has regarding my father's family. He (William North) was born, I believe, in Leven on 19/01/1914.  As far as I know his family lived in or around Leven and I remember being taken to a small graveyard outside of the village where some family members were buried.  The graveyard was not close to a church so it could be the one I have read about on your site (St Faiths). Any information would be appreciated. (posted 13 September 05)

DONT KNOW WHEN SHE WAS BORN BUT THEY BOTH DIED IN ALDBROUGH JOHN IN 1773 AND ELIZABETH 1793 OR 1795.CANT FIND WHO JOHNS PARENTS WERE SO I CANT GET ANY FURTHER BACK. (posted 6 September 05)

Jeremy/Debbie Clarke Attn Jeff Runton

Hi - Saw that you posted a request about the Runtons you may possibly be related to from Leven. My 3 times great granddad married into the family in 1845 (James Wylie). He married Hannah Runton in Warne in the parish of Mearne.  Looks like she may have been with child as James Runton Wylie was born not very long afterward, which may explain their marriage in a different parish.   I found some documents and a mention of Hannahs fathers will on the Beverley Archive Website.

George Runton and Mary  were Hannahs parents. A Margaret Runton who was married to Fances Sellers. Ann and Elizabeth and Catherine Runton 2 sons James and George Runton.

Father George died on the 23rd of February 1860.

It seems that mother Margaret died on the 7th September 1900.  Its not probably what you are looking for and if you have the info already then I am truly sorry for getting your hopes up.  As you can see from my posting I would dearly love to know a little about the Runtons as they are a small bit of the history I am trying to piece together about the Wylies.  (posted 6 August 05)

Debbie Clarke Wylie / Runton

Hi,  As an addition to the Wylie family!  I have found out that my Great Great Great Grandfather married a Hannah Runton in 1845 in Mearne in the Parish of Warne.  The Runtons were a farming family by the looks of things around Leven and or Aike and my family returned to Leven where James and Hannah had their family, a rather large family. Does anyone know anything about the Runtons history? Would be great to put meat on bones!! (posted 4 August 05)

Edwin Watts

I am an historian of the NZ Anglican church, and have been researching all the Anglican priests who served here. Edwin Watts was the rector of Leven for a long time - I wonder whether you have information that can confirm my entry on his years there and maybe give me any more information about him - memorials for instance, and the exact dates when he came and went. Or anything about his wife.
Ill insert my Biographical Directory entry on him here so that you can see what I have found so far. You will see that it is a fairly muddled life. Much moving around - too much money? scandal? Restless? Looking for something? Anyway, if he was in fact all those years at Leven, maybe he found what he wanted there.
Who knows, but the search for these character is always interesting, and the research provides an unique database for NZ historians The online edition will be updated later this year. (the Biological directory and the site URL is available  by email request to family@leven-village.co.uk

They were both born in Leven, Yorks, U.K. as were their children.1881 British Census (on Internet www.familysearch.org) shows they had 8 children by then & I believe they had 3 more by 1888. Judith  Maxwell

Hi, I'm researching Maxwells in Leven. My great grandfather Robert M Maxwell was in Leven in 1881, working as a ground seedsman, he was married to Mary Calvert and they had 10 children in Leven between 1882 and 1900, they then moved to Beverley.

One of those children, my grandfather, Kenneth Percy Maxwell ran a corn and seed business from the warehouse by the canal, I remember visiting often as a child but know it is now a private residence.

Is there anyone who is connected to this family or knows anything about them?

Hare family Elgeys

hi, we are trying to find out any information about the early headmasters of Leven C of E and their families or the Elgeys in the 1800s.

After further research we have found that Gertrude Elgey (nee Withers) was also married at Holy Trinity Chruch to Arthur Elgey approximately 1905 and that Arthur's father, Frederick Elgey married the schoolmaster's daughter from Leven school.  The schoolmaster's surname was Dunn or similar spelling. We think they must have married around 1870.  We do not have a first name for either the schoolmaster or his daughter. Any further comments/information would be greatly appreciated

Hi Howard; I'm David Smith I was born in the village in 1946 at a place called Little Garth on the Hornsea road.  I knew a Taylor family who were farming in the village near to Little Garth, I don't know the year they came to the farm but they were there when my parents left in 1953/54.

There was Ted as most called him .  Ann was his eldest daughter and Audrey was either the name of his wife or his younger daughter I can't remember (well I was only little).  I'm not sure this is the same Taylor family you are looking for but hope it will be of some use, I'll keep thinking  -  David

My grandfather's Australian Imperial Force (AIF) enlistment papers for World War I list him as living at "Little Sarth, Leven in Hull" in September 1915. If anyone can provide any details about him or Little Sarth it would be greatly appreciated.
Pauline [Hull]  Re: Lusby, Myers & Kilvington

Hi Mark, I have just seen your mail regarding the above names. Jane Kilvington was my Great Gran Elizabeth Kilvington`s sister. Jane Married George Myers in 1852.Your Elizabeth was their daughter. I`m afraid I can't help with your Lusby family, but have quite a lot on the Kilvington`s.  Looking at the 1891 census for Leven there is Charles Lusby 24 single born Grimsby. Ag. Lab. Is this your Charles.?

Sally Wise Re: Masterman

I would like to thank Bob and the provider of this site for the suggestion of looking at the churches.   The provider checked the Holy Trinity Churchyard and St. Faith's churchyard for me.  He did not find my great grandfather, but a Mark Masterman.  It's a start.  Thank you both for taking the time to help me!!  Sally

Bob Whitton Re: Masterman

hi sally re the address of Leven churches, maybe if you contact the editor of this site he lives in the village and has old family connections, so there is just a chance he may be better able to help  good luck  bob

Sally Wise Re: Masterman

Dear Bob,  I live in California, and am not sure what address the "local Leven church" would be.  The churches on this site are either not there any longer or built after 1812.  If someone in Leven has an idea of where I can write, I would appreciate it.  Thank you.

Bob Whitton Re: Masterman

Hi Sally, was just reading your mail re family tree, have you tried contacting the local Leven church? they must have records of births /christenings etc -  just a thought - I guess you have already been and done it  -  bob

Sally Wise (California) Masterman

I was wondering if there is someone who could help me with genealogy. My great grandfather Matthew Masterman was born in the Parish in 1812. We have been looking for a long time for a father. Old family records have a John Masterman born about 1786 or Henry Masterman born about 1790. Can anyone help?

Deborah Clarke  Wylie

I am researching my family tree and hope someone can help in tracing members of the Wylie family in or around the area. We know of a James Wylie around 1851, listed as a butcher. This family consisted of wife Hannah, sons John G, James R, Thomas (my great great grandfather), Henry, and daughters, Mary and Kate. What is left of the family we know, now mostly reside in Lincolnshire, though there are others further a-field. It would be great to find the littlest of information.
