"Money
for Nothing" - Dire Straits Tribute Night
Saturday
6th May 2006
|
|
9pm
sharp - anticipation filled the air - darkness fell, and the crowd went
silent...three drumstick taps and it all sprang into action, the lights
came up and we could see and hear the band for the first time.
Nothing
seemed too difficult as the Straits numbers were delivered, one by one,
with style, ease and confidence. The sheer professionalism of the young
guitarist, and the way he made it look so easy was awe inspiring. By the
time we got to "Brothers in Arms" the emotion of the event had
caught up with a few. The drummer never stopped smiling all night,
endearing himself to the attentive and admiring audience. Every song and every delivery was met
with loud applause and whistles, just like at a real Straits gig

The
first slot finished, time to recharge the glasses. There
was a real buzz around the hall, everyone talking about
the guitar playing we'd just witnessed - not only
sounding like Straits, but the vocal delivery from Aled
sounded like Knopfler himself.

The
second slot began where the first left off, the audience
again raising their hands aloft, clapping in time to the
beat, the magical abilities of this band carrying us on
a superb journey through "Twisting by the
Pool", "Local Hero" and "Lady
Writer" to mention just a few. |

All
too quickly the night drew to a close, when the band
said goodnight the hall erupted with applause, cheers
and whistles, as it had all night..."More" was
being shouted louder and louder, the place was now in a
frenzy. They agreed to do a couple more - "Money
for Nothing " was greeted in the usual manner, as
was "Walk of Life". The band left the stage
to a standing ovation, once again the audience
began the chants of 'more', and the whistling and
cheering was intense. Was it all over? - the band were
nowhere to be seen, the cheering continued - the stage
door opened and the cheering became louder. The band
agreed to do one final song and after only a couple
of notes, the place erupted once again as
"Sultans of Swing" was instantly
recognisable. |

Another
standing ovation for the band as they left the stage was every
bit deserved, we'd just witnessed guitar playing at its very
best.
